Air Fryer Hush Puppies
These crispy and golden hush puppies, studded with bits of onion and jalapeño, get a healthy makeover by skipping the deep fryer. The air fryer delivers on the classic crispy crust while using just a fraction of the oil from the classic version.
Ingredients
- 1 ¼ cups fine plain yellow cornmeal
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup chopped jalapeño pepper
- ¼ cup chopped yellow onion
- ½ cup buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg, beaten
- cooking spray
Directions
- Preheat oven to 200°F. Combine cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, garlic powder, cayenne and salt in a medium bowl. Add jalapeño and onion; stir to combine. Whisk together buttermilk, melted butter and egg in a small bowl. Add the buttermilk mixture to the cornmeal mixture and stir to blend. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.
- Preheat air fryer and fry basket to 400°F for 10 minutes. Remove the basket; carefully line with foil and coat lightly with cooking spray. Scoop 4 heaping tablespoonfuls of the chilled batter onto the prepared basket. Coat the tops lightly with cooking spray. Cook until puffed and golden brown, about 9 minutes. Transfer the cooked hush puppies to a baking sheet and keep warm in the oven. Repeat with the remaining batter.
